William Wiberforce MP, leader of the paliamentary
campaign for the abolition of the slave trade in
the British Empire was born in Hull.

Wilberforce campaigned tirelessly for the end of
slavery in the British Empire until his death just
three days after the passing of the Slave Trade
Act of 1833.

The father of modern football, Ebenezer
Cobb Morley, was also born in the City of Hull.

Morley first proposed the creation of a
governing body for football, which resulted in the creation of
the FA, the world's first football association. This

The English Civil War began in Hull in the year
1642. Plotters at the Ye Olde White Harte in Hull
led by the Governor of Hull, Sir Joh Hotham, secretly
agreed to refuse King Charles I entry into the
city. This resulted in Royalist forces laying siege to
Hull in what was the first action of the war that
resulted in the (temporary) fall of the British
Monarchy.

Welcome to the Hull Hall of Fame, a celebration of the people of the City of Kingston-upon-Hull and the city’s many gifts to the world. This website is your go-to site for learning all about the rich history of Hull and some of the many reasons why it was awarded as the UK City of Culture for 2017. So a quick whizz around the Highlights of Hull you will find here; the screen you are reading this page on will have its origins in LCD Technology deleveloped at Hull University, Abolotion of Slavery was led by Hull MP William Wilberforce. Authors and Poets with Hull ties include, Phillip Larkin, Andrew Motion, Andrew Marvell, John Godber, JRR Tolkein, Winfred Holtby.

Hull is often portrayed negatively but there are so many famous people and events from this monumental city. We just want to celebrate those people that were born or made Hull their home for a while.

Bands and musicians with local ties include; Housemartins; Beautiful South, Paul Heaton, Fatboy Slim, David Bowies band members - Mick Ronson and Trevor Bolder, Roland Gift of Fine Young Canibals fame, Joe Longthorne. Trevor Bolder was also in Wishbone Ash and Uriah Heap.

Actors with strong Hull links include; Maureen Lipman CBE, Debra Stephenson, Reece Shearsmith, Marjorie Rhodes. The Movie Mogul Lord J Arthur Rank was also born on Holderness Road in Hull. The Movie Director behind the English Patient that won nine Oscars was Anthony Minghella who went to Hull University.
