Hull Hall of Fame- the City of Hull has had many famous bands and musicians based or born in the city down the decades, like;  Mick Ronson, Paul Heaton, Joe Longthorne, Patricia Bredin, Fat Boy Slim, Kingmaker, etc. Plus a new generation of stars like Calum Scott.

Not just local stars but also connections with with many great artists and epic bands like David Bowie, Dexy's Midnight Runners, Beautiful South, Housemartins, Sade, Wishbone Ash, Uriah Heap, etc.


Musicians, singers and bands from Hull & East Yorkshire

Heaton Abbott Paul Heaton   Paul Heaton used to live in Grafton Street, Hull. After his amazing Housemartins and Beautiful South period, he has released several solo albums and then teamed up with Jacqui Abbot and released  more albums. Also doing extensive touring again, albums include; Wisdom, Laughter And Lines, Crooked Calypso, Acid Country, Under The Influence.
Mick Ronson Guitar Legend from Hull Mick Ronson   Mick Ronson Rock Guitar Legend. Played on many of David Bowies Iconic Albums and  Tours. He also played guitar for Morrisey, Ian Hunter, Mott The Hoople, Van Morrison, Elton John, Lou Reed, Roger Daltry, and Bob Dylan. Next Time you hear Lou Reeds classic Perfect Day, that Guitar and piano - Mick Ronson from Hull!!!! All in all not bad for a Hull Lad.  His Bowie era Albums included; Aladdin Sane, Hunky Dory,  The Man Who Sold the World, Pin-ups and of course The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars. Mick sadly died aged only 46.
Aladdin Sane Trevor Bolder   Trevor Bolder Trevor Bolder was with Davd Bowie for the Ziggy Stardust.
After leaving Bowie he went on to join Uriah Heap in 1976 and did a few Albums before a brief spell with Wishbone Ash. Some of his 22 Uriah Heap Albums include; Firefly, Conquest, Equator, Wake the Sleeper, Spellbinder, etc

Ziggy  Woody Woodmansey Drifting out to Driffield. Driffield born Mick "Woody" Woodmansey was in David Bowies backing band Spiders from Mars alongside other Hull band member Trevor Bolder. His Bowie era Albums included; The Man Who Sold the World,  Aladdin Sane, Hunky Dory, and of course The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars  He went on to be a member of The Cybernauts and Supergroup Holy, Holy with Tony Visconti. His autobigraphy is called Spider from Mars: My Life with Bowie
Spiders from Mars Hull Spiders from Mars / Hype   Spiders from Mars and Hype - Originally David Bowies backing band but also made an albim when Bowie left to live in America.
The Band reportedly got its name following a mass UFO sighting at an Italian football game read more here. The Band line up changed over time but Hull lads Mick Ronson, Trevor Bolder and Driffield's Woody Woodmansey featured.
Roland Gift Hull influences  Roland Gift   Roland Gift - Actor and singer was famously the handsome frontman of the Fine Young Cannibals. Tracks Come on Eileen and Gino will still fill a dance floor at any wedding with classics like Come on Eileen and She Drives Me crazy. Fine Young Cannibals: The Collection. He also acts and has appeared in plays like Romeo and Juliet. Hull's famous night club Spiders still plays Dexys music to this day! Roland Gift's Mum had a gift shop on Princes Avenue.
Everything But The Girl Chart topping band formed by two Hull University students. The band name was based on marketing line that used to adorn the huge windows of furniture store Turners on Beverley Road. Best Of Everything But The Girl. The duo, Ben Watts and Tracey Thorn, stayed together for 12 albums and until about 2000 and both still in the music industry. Ben Watts has also written 2 autobiographies.
Calum Scott Hull Calum Scott Hull's Calum Scott came to prominence when he reached the final stages of Britain's Got Talent 2015 series. He used to perform at the Griffin pub on Anlaby Raod and work for Hull City Council. He also won the Hull Daily Mail Star Search competition in 2013. His debut album  Only Human  also features a track with Leona Lewis and another with Tiësto. He launched his album during a special Gig at Hull HMV. He has also written a song about his Hull roots called Under 3 Crowns which is sadly not on the album
Beautiful South - The Beautiful South Beautiful South formed in 1989 when The Housemartins fled the nest! Line up consisted of Paul Heaton, David Hemmingway Briana Corrigan, Sean Welch, David Stead, David Rotheray. Briana Corrigan leaving to be replaced by Jacqui Abbott. Had many hit albums before their Greatest Hits album Carry On Up The Charts did what it said and became one of the top selling albums in the UK! The Beautiful South, Housemartins and Paul Heaton will  always be popular here in Hull! Albums included; Blue Is The Colour, Choke, 0898 Beautiful South, Solid Bronze - Great Hits.
The Housemartins The Housemartins based in the infamous Grafton Street area of Hull. Had many hits and big -selling Albums. Their album London 0 Hull 4, Now That's What I Call Quite Good, The Best Of by The Housemartins Some of the band members came from the Hull band The Gargoyles. Members included; Paul Heaton, Ted Key, Norman Cook (AKA Fat Boy Slim),
Fat Boy Slim after the Hull years Norman Cook Norman Cook AKA (Fat Boy Slim) had formed a shortlived band. In 1985 Ted Key left the Housemartins before their first tour. So Paul Heaton reconnected with Norman Cook and asked him to join the Housemartins and move to Hull. I guess the phone call went someting like Right Here Right now! Gargoyles - Hull Band The Gargoyles   The Gargoyles. Hull band who regularly played the Adelphi. There is a live recording of one of there gigs from there. Including a cracking track called Ferry across-the-Humber. Line up was Eddie Smith, Ted Key, Chris Elliot, Paul Warhurst, Martin Owens. Some band members left to join the Housemartins but reformed when that group split.Albums included, Mrs Two Dinners.
Ted Key Anarchy in Argos Ted Key and the Kingstons   Ted Key and the Kingstons. Ted Key formerly with the HouseMartins and the Gargoyles is now in a new band. Great to see him back performing and the new band will have a new album out in mid-2018. You can see them on You tube - Anarchy in Argos. The Graffitti appeared on the Scott Street bridge before Banksy made it famous his way.
Kingmaker Bridge KingMaker Early 90s India band Kingmaker formed with Hull's John Andrew, Drummer, as part of the original line up. They toured in 1992 with Radiohead. There albums included Eat Yourself Whole, To Hell With Humdrum, Saturday's Not What It Used To Be.
After a break up were reformed as Kingmaker MMX

  • Red Guitars - Indie Band from Hull. Formed by Kidd and Lewis who met a Hulls arts project.  Line up included; Jeremy Kidd (vocals), Hallam Lewis (guitar),John Rowley (guitar)
  • Lou Howard (bass),Robert Holmes (vocals/guitar ),Matt Higgins (drums). They topped the UK Indie chart several times.
Patricia Bredin Patricia Bredin Singer and Actor. In 1957 she sung Britains first ever entry in the Eurovision Song Contest with a song called All, It was just 1 Min 52 Secs long and was the shortest ever Euro-vision entry until 2015. One of several  film appearences included starring alongside fellow Hull Actor Ian Carmichael in Left Right and Centre

Joe Longthorne - Entertainer Singer  Joe Longthorne MBE 2018 and Joe Longthorne MBE is on his 50th Anniversary tour. 50 years in show-biz is an outstanding achievement. Although often referred to as a singer he is an entertainer; story-teller, impressionist, etc. Add a CD to your collection; Joe Longthorne - The Essential Collection.
Squeeze Greatest Hits - Hull John Bentley Squeeze   Squeeze had a Hull band member for a few years John Bentely. He has done a few reappearences over the many tours in this bands history. Add the Squeeze Greatest Hits to your collection
The Christians - Henry Priestman The Christians -Henry Priestman   3 Liverpool brothers Roger, Russell and Gary Christian formed the Christians and added Hull lad Henry Christian Priestman to their line-up. Albums included;
Ronnie Hilton Singer and Presenter was a regularly in the Top 10 in the fifties. He presented the BBC2 Program The Sound of the Fifties for many years. A true Hull music pioneer.
Sade Band - Hull Hall of Fame Sade's Band   Sade's Grammy winning band had three Hull band Members; Paul Denham (Bass) , Stuart Mathewman - AKA Cotton Belly (Guitar, Saxophone), Paul Cooke (Drums).So think Hull, whenever you hear those Sade classics like Smooth Operator and Your Love is King. All three have made their own mark on the music industry too, as producers, songwriters, music film score creators and with other bands. Sade's album The Ultimate Collection will give you a taste of three Hull lads in action.
Sweetback Hull Hall of Fame Sweetback   Sweetback - Hull band Members; Paul Denham (Bass) , Stuart Mathewman - AKA Cotton Belly (Guitar, Saxophone). This was a side project when not working with Sade. Their sensational album is well worth a listen Sweetback
Stuart Matthewman - Hull Hall of Fame Twin Danger /  Stewart Matthewman   Twin Danger features Hull's Stewart Matthewman (Guitar, Saxophone) working alongside Vanessa Blay. Their acclaimed album is simply called Twin Danger.
Paul Cooke Sade  Paul Cooke   Paul Cooke drummer from Hull who was in Sade's band. Featured on those  those Sade classics like Smooth Operator and Your Love is King. Wrote an autobiography  of his time with band My Sade Story and a published diary Sade Drummer: Diary of a Musician 1981-2015 He later formed his own Latin Jazz band Esposito. He left the Sade band to focus on studio work.
David Whitfield   David Whitfield career started entertaining his shipmates in the Navy in World War II. But his career culminated with landmarks like first males] to achieve a Gold Disk, First Person to have Number 1 in UK and USA, first British artist to sell a million records in the UK. There is a Whitfield statue near Hull New Theatre. Add some David Whitfield to your collection; The Hits and More... The Ultimate Collection
Paddingtons - Hull Hall of Fame The Paddingtons  

Hull Indie band The Paddingtons played the Wellie Club, Adelphi and The Railway in Cottingham. Line up consisted of Tom Atkin (vocals), Stuee Bevan/ Martin Hines (guitar), Josh Hubbard (guitar) plus brothers Lloyd (bass) and Grant Dobbs (drums). CD includes; Back To The Bus, 50 to a Pound and 21 / Some Old Girl.

Berri - Hull Hall of Fame Berri - Rebecca Sleight   Berri - Rebecca Sleight went to school in the Beverley area. Her single, The Sunshine After the Rain, made it to Number in the UK charts. Her albums included; Shine Like a Star.
Hullaballoos - Hull Hall of Fame  Hullaballoos   Sixties band the Hullabaloos were from Hull. They started as Ricky Knight and the Crusaders. Band members were Rick Knight, Andy Woonton, Harry Dunn, Mick Wayne and Geoff Mortimer. Their look involved blonde locks! They released 2 albums but fizzled out in 1966. Albums included; Did You Ever by Hullaballoos
Reading Frestival - Melvin Benn - Hull Hall of fame Melvin Benn   Melvin Benn - Festival Fiend. Hull born lad is the Managing Director of Festival Republic. They organise Festivals Like; Reading, Leeds, Latitude, Download, Wireless, V and Electric Picnic. A great three disc set of Reading Music is Reading Festival Indie Years
      Other notable musicians include Terry Bell who worked with Ken Dodd RIP, for ten years.
